Why do we need to support transition? 14.5% achieving 5 A*- C (including English and Maths) compared to 59% of non CIC During 11-12, half of all CIC studying in Kent and Medway were on Level 2 courses Very low HE participation (0-4%) 48% NEET – leads to higher levels of youth offending, teenage pregnancy, more serious drug use…. Approximately ¼ withdraw in post 16 education in Kent Local Authority now required to support young people up to age 25 Ofsted - educational outcomes of CIC/CL now a significant contributory factor in the overall judgment grade 3

Feedback from young person - Khy Transition Activity Working in provider type plot the transition year cycle Record what issues are faced and how you support transition Activity feedback Action Identify one thing that you can take back to your institution to action following this activity 4

Current examples of supporting transition – Virtual School Kent: VSK locality teams working in collaboration with post 16 providers to identify and introduce those joining them in the following September VSK Support Officers working with young people CXK Youth Contract referral – automatic process Support during results/enrolment/induction time Delivering training to Foster Carers on post 16 options Continuing Post 16 PEPs Celebrating post 16 achievement through nominations/award event 5

VSK Developing: Clear process for those withdrawing from providers Promotion of post 16 E-PEP once live (change of questions) Update on-line information regarding options Update activities for Social Workers/Foster Carers of support available and options for young person 6

7 Supporting transition – K College
Sticky Transitions how to smooth the way between school, college and university Supporting transition – K College Key Actions (from the summer term prior to transition – School to College) Working to a Service Level Agreement with Partners Designated Member of Staff (DMS) makes contact with feeder schools to identify young people and offer support Personal Tutor support — each young person is allocated a PT prior to coming into College and will choose whether to have ongoing PT support throughout their time with us Individual transition activity takes place during the summer term and across the summer break 7

K College continued…. DMS makes contact with partner organisations to provide targeted support where relevant Student finance staff advise young people on their entitlement to Vulnerable Young Person Bursary ALS support identified if required A careers appointment is made with CEIAG staff We use electronic systems to track and monitor progress e.g ePEP, eILP and Intervention Log.   23/05/2019 Oscar Plummer

Underpinning philosophy of raising aspirations CEIAG intervention and support for young people interested in progressing to university Personal Tutor supports learner in UCAS application process Course Tutor – support and guidance re achieving required grades Visits to HEI’s where appropriate/possible (funding provided) HE finance guidance and support from staff Personal budgeting sessions 23/05/2019 Oscar Plummer
