God’s Son (Part 3)

This study will have two parts:
Discovering God’s Son This study will have two parts: The PERSON of Christ The WORK of Christ
5
Falls into three categories:
II. His Work Falls into three categories: KING PRIEST PROPHET
6
Today we will focus on: KING PROPHET
7
Jesus is the Prophet Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you-- even Jesus. 21 He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets....
8
Acts 3: 22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.' The POINT Acts applies the prophetic words of Moses, regarding a coming prophet like Moses, to Jesus!
9
His prophetic ministry
1. His Forth-telling ministry: Preaching 2. His Foretelling ministry: Predicting
10
His Preaching Ministry
1- Concerned the Gospel Luke 4:16 ...on the Sabbath day he [Jesus] went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
11
His Preaching Ministry
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” Gospel = Good News
12
His Preaching Ministry
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." He is the "gospel preacher" of Isaiah's prophecy!
13
His Preaching Ministry
2- Concerned the “kingdom of heaven” and “kingdom of God” Matthew 4:17 states: From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
14
His Preaching Ministry
Therefore, He preached the good news (gospel) of the coming Kingdom of God (Millennial kingdom) was imminent. Why? Because… The King was present! Kingdom powers were present. BUT Kingdom subjects were not present! They rejected him.
15
Now let’s turn our attention to His
Prophetic Predictive Ministry
16
His Predictive Ministry
1- His own death, burial, and resurrection predicted Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
17
His Predictive Ministry
2- Formation of the Church Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. JEW GENTILE
18
His Predictive Ministry
2- Formation of the Church “His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace” Eph 2:15 JEW GENTILE CHURCH
19
His Predictive Ministry
3- Destruction of Jerusalem Luke 21:5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
20
His Predictive Ministry
4- The Tribulation and Second Coming As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
21
His Predictive Ministry
5 For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, 'and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
22
Now let’s turn our attention to
KING Jesus as King
23
Jesus is King John 18:36 …Jesus answered [Pilate], "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, ….
24
Jesus was born king Luke 1:31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
25
Jesus was born king Matthew 2:1 ...Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
26
Jesus preached kingdom
After the 40 day temptation of Christ Matthew 4:17 states: From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
27
So, Where is the Kingdom?
28
Jesus’ kingdom was rejected
John 1:11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
29
The Official Presentation of Jesus as King
The Triumphal Entry (Palm Sunday) took place … to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'” (Matthew 21:4-5)
30
Jesus’ Kingdom was Rejected
Just five days later! Crucified their King
31
Jesus’ Kingdom was Rejected
13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
32
Jesus’ Kingdom was Postponed
Jesus predicted it: Matthew 21:43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. The phrase “will be taken from you” is future tense. It will be given to a future generation of Jews who produce the fruit that characterizes the kingdom--namely repentance!
33
Meanwhile, Jesus is building a new people
Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Future during the life of Christ! Therefore it did not exist in the OT! The church began on Pentecost in Acts 2! The church will end at the “Rapture!” Then the repentant Jews will arise!
34
Jesus’ Coming Kingdom Matthew 24:44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
35
Jesus Returns as King Revelation 19:16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
36
Jesus’ Kingdom will last 1,000 years
Revelation 21:4 They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 1,000 year reign
37
Then Jesus offers up the kingdom to the Father
1 Corinthians 15:24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
38
Conclusion: Jesus is KING PRIEST PROPHET

Teacher Notes for Discovery 103-C Discovering God’s Son--”His Work” Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D. Min. INTRODUCTION: Last time we focuses on the Person of Christ … Today we will focus on the Work of Christ. HIS WORK falls into three categories: 1--PROPHET 2--PRIEST 3--KING Today we will focus on His PROPHETIC and KINGLY Work I. Jesus is the PROPHET One clear passage that calls Jesus a prophet is … Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you-- even Jesus. 21 He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets 22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.’ The Point -- Acts applies the prophetic words of MOSES regarding a coming PROPHET like Moses, to JESUS! His Prophetic ministry has two parts: 1. His FORTH-telling ministry: PREACHING 2. His FORE-telling ministry: PROPHECYING
43
A. His PREACHING Ministry 1- Concerned the GOSPEL = THE GOOD NEWS
Luke 4:16 ...on the Sabbath day he [Jesus] went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has Anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 2- Concerns the “kingdom of HEAVEN” and “kingdom of GOD.” These refer to the same kingdom (the mediatorial reign of Jesus Christ in the future millennial reign. The term is derviced from Daniel 2:44 where it is said that “the God of heaven will set up a kingdom.” Just the “ark of the covenant of God is refered to by both “ark of the covenant” and “ark of God” so the coming kingdom is refered to by the terms “kingdom of heaven” and “kingdom of God.” They are one and the same. Matthew 4:17 states: From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” It was theoretically as near as seven years away (He only had to be crucified , resurrected from the dead, and ascended into heaven with the period of Tribulation immediately following to fulfill OT prophecies. Following the seven year Tribulation He would return to set up this kingdom that was “near!” Had the nation not rejected Him, but rather received Him genuinely as their king by bringing forth the fruit of repentance, most likely the Gentile Romans would have crucified Him for insurection--with the Tribulation immediately following His resurrection and ascension!) Therefore, He preached the good news (gospel) of the coming Kingdom of God (MILLENNIAL kingdom) was IMMINENT. Why? Because… The KING was present! Kingdom POWERS (I.e. He was performing miracles as signs of whom He was) were present. However, Kingdom SUBJECTS were not present! (The nation rejected Him—they refused to submit to Him) They REJECTED him.
44
B. His PRPHETIC-PREDICTIVE Ministry … Jesus predicted:
1- His own DEATH, BURIAL, and RESURRECTION predicted Mat 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life 2- Formation of the CHURCH predicted Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Notice the future tense! “His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace” Eph 2:15 The graphical illustration depicts God taking out of both Jews and Gentiles and making one new man, the church. Compare 1 Corinthians 10:31-32. 3- Destruction of JERUSALEM predicted Luke 21:5 Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6 "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” This prophecy is in reference to the destruction of Jerusalem under the Roman General Titus in 70 A.D. 4- The TRIBULATION and SECOND COMING predicted (Matthew 24…) As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” 4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
45
3- Jesus’ kingdom was REJECTED:
Compare the KJV which calls this the beginning of sorrows in verse 21 and 29 it is called the “tribulation.” II. Jesus is KING John 18:36 …Jesus answered [Pilate], "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, …. 1- Jesus was BORN king Luke 1:31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." Matthew 2:1 ...Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” 2- Jesus PREACHED kingdom After the 40 day temptation of Christ Matthew 4:17 states: From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” So, where is the KINGDOM? Answer: 3- Jesus’ kingdom was REJECTED: John 1:11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

4- The OFFICIAL PRESENTATION of Jesus as King The TRIUMPHAL ENTRY (Palm Sunday) took place … to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'” (Matthew 21:4-5) Just five days later . . .they crucified their King! As John records … John 19:13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. 5. Jesus’ Kingdom was POSTPONED! Jesus predicted it: Matthew 21:43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. The phrase “will be taken from you” is future TENSE. It will be given to a future generation of Jews who produce the fruit that characterizes the kingdom--namely RIGHTEOUSNESS! 6. Meanwhile, Jesus is building a new PEOPLE! Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. Future during the life of CHRIST! Therefore it did not EXIST in the OLD TESTAMET! The church BEGAN on PENTECOST in Acts 2! The church will end at the “RAPTURE!” Then the repentant JEWS will arise!
47
7. Jesus’ COMING Kingdom Matthew 24:44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. 8.
