This will evolve as we become more involved with the Strathclyde University programme Will continue to emphasise the enjoyment of reading More books may be sent home – some to be read with parents and others to be enjoyed independently If a book appears too easy this will be because it has been practiced extensively in class or has been chosen as a fun, comfortable book Further details will follow

Two Types of Spelling Words
Phonics-based Words Sight Words You can ‘sound out’ these words, they make sense using the phonics taught in P1-3 Words that children should know on sight without having to sound out – may not be able to be sounded out c-a-r-d he t-r-a-g-i-c come b-a-n-a-n-a people i-n-t-e-r-v-e-n-ti-o-n through

Spelling Strategies Using analogy – if you can spell light – you can also spell bright, fright and tight Mnemonic – children create their own memory aid e.g. trial – the road is a loop practice ice – noun practise ise - verb Separate – there is a rat in separate Spelling rules (if appropriate) e.g. i before e except after c – brief, ceiling
