Embedded computers An embedded computer is a single microprocessor that includes RAM, ROM and a CPU An embedded computer is frequently used to control a device using simple controls

Embedded Systems Without embedded systems, a digital device would not be able to perform specific functions For example, a dishwasher wouldn’t know how to heat the water, or a satnav wouldn’t know how to communicate with a satellite What embedded functions do cars use?

Uses for embedded systems
Embedded systems are custom made to meet particular needs. They are used in: Military Space exploration Medical equipment Automobiles Factories As well as most homes and organisations

Is a car an embedded system? No, as it is not a single computing device it is a complex machine made up of several embedded systems and mechanical devices What embedded systems might you find in a car?

Designing an embedded system
Imagine you are designing a new robotic toy for children. Work in pairs to plan the inputs, processes and outputs would like your robot to have. Remember to be specific!

Using an embedded system
Advantages: Disadvantages: As it is written for specific hardware it often uses low energy consumption Smaller in size They are robust and durable Difficult to program and requires specialist knowledge If a problem occurs with the system it is difficult to repair
