CHAPTER 7 TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS/CRASHES

2 STEPS TO TAKE IF YOU ARE INVOLVED OR COME UPON A TRAFFIC CRASH
Stop your vehicle in a safe, well-lighted public place. Help any injured person. (protect the person from traffic. Cover the injured person for comfort and to avoid shock. Do not move a person unless absolutely necessary. Call 911) Warn other drivers using flares if available Ask everyone involved for Name Addresses Phone numbers Driver’s license numbers License plate numbers

3 Appearing in Court If you receive a ticket for a minor traffic violation, you are required to post bond (in cash, bond card, or license) If your ticket was posted, you pay the ticket before the first court date. (if you fail to pay the ticket or appear in court a second court date may be set. Failure to show up a second time will result in loss of bond and/or suspension of your license. Parent must be present if offender is under age 18.)

4 Crash reports REGARDLESS OF FAULT, a crash report must be filed by the driver of a vehicle if the crash involves death, bodily injury or property damage of more than $1500 (if uninsured a report must be filed for $500 or more) Notify police immediately A report also must be made to the Illinois department of Transportation (IDOT) within 10 days.

5 Unattended Vehicles If you are involved in a crash that causes damage to an unattended vehicle or other property: Stop your vehicle away from traffic Leave your name, address, phone number, and license plate number Notify police Complete required crash reports. (if you fail to report the crash, you may be fined up to $2500 and given 1 year jail sentence)

6 Leaving the Scene of a Crash
The driver has 30 minutes to report a crash after it occurs. If someone is killed or injured, the Secretary of State is required to revoke your license. If there is more than $1000 damage, your driving privileges will be suspended.

7 Safety Responsibility
The Safety Responsibility Law requires you to be able to put up security or guarantee of payment. If you don’t have insurance coverage, your license may be suspended until the case is settled. Individuals convicted of mandatory insurance violations will lose their driving privileges for a minimum of 3 months and be required to pay a $100 reinstatement fee

8 Financial Responsibility Law
You are required to file proof of financial responsibility.
