25
Jesus is identified as perfect humanity and is called the “last”
3-He is Human Jesus is identified as perfect humanity and is called the “last” Adam (1 Cor 15:45). All that can be said of true humanity, except sin (2 Cor 5:21; 1 Pet 2:21; 1 John 3:5), can be said of Jesus.
26
3-He is Human [1] Therefore, He had a human:
birth (Romans 1:3; Gal 4:4) body (Heb. 2:14; 10:5; John 1:14) maturity (Luke 2:52) soul (John 12:27) spirit (Mk 2:8)
27
3-He is Human [2] He had human limitations: He hungered (Mat 4:2)
He thirsted (John 4:7) He grew tired (John 4:6) He slept (Mat 8:24)
28
3-He is Human [3] He had human names: Son of man (Luke 19:10)
Son of David (Mat 1:1) Son of Abraham (Mat 1:1) man (1 Tim 2:5) Jesus (Mat 1:21)
29
4-He is God-man In the incarnation of Jesus Christ there is one single indivisible Person, Who is God, and there are two permanently united, but distinct natures: a divine nature and a human nature.
30
One Person Divine Nature
31
One Person Divine Nature Human Nature
32
Divine Nature Human Nature GOD-man
33
4-He is God-man The union exists in such a way that the properties of the two natures are neither transferred nor changed in any way. He is in one person the God-man. Scripture says:
34
Grace Truth 4-He is God-man Word “came from the father”
GLORY Word The Word (the logos =logos) “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 Grace Truth
35
4-He is God-man He did not take another person to His nature, rather, in the incarnation, He took a non-personal human nature (Luke 1:35). Divine Nature One Person Human
36
4-He is God-man Therefore the Divine Person (logos logos) is the single Person of the human nature as well as the Person of the divine nature (Romans 1:3,4).
37
5-He is Virgin Born Within the virgin Mary’s womb, was conceived, supernaturally, the sinless human nature and all that pertains to the humanity of Jesus Christ.
38
5-He is Virgin Born Both Matthew and Luke affirm that the conception was through the agency of the Holy Spirit: Mat 1:20 Luke 1:31; 35
39
5-He is Virgin Born Not only did the Holy Spirit produce the conception, but He also protected the embryo until birth (Luke 1:35). The virgin birth kept the Lord from the pollution of a sinful nature.
40
5-He is Virgin Born Therefore, He is sinless and he is a suitable Savior!

TEACHER NOTES FOR --DISCOVERY 103-A Discovering God—“God’s Works”
Prepared by Dennis Henderson, D.Min. Introduction: This study will have two parts: 1. The Person of Christ 2. The Work of Christ Today we will focus on the person of Christ! HIS PERSON I. He is PRE-EXISTENT A. The Second Person of the trinity existed prior to the incarnation … Proof: Micah the prophet lived around 700 years before Christ he said . . . Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Notice that BETHLEHEM is the prophesied target. Notice the FUTURE TENSE of “will come” Notice the person who is to come has a pre-existent existence – this is a prophetic passage of the coming of Messiah, Jesus who existed before the incarnation! (incarnation = coming in flesh)> John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. Notice that the term “Word” is capitalized as a proper noun. It is the Greek word logos (logos). It is the title of the Pre-existent person who is the “Second person of the Trinity.” This passage indicates that he preexisted the incarnation ad existed at the beginning of all beginnings. He was with God and He Himself is God. More will be said of this later
45
John 8:8 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!“
Notice: Abraham lived somewhere around 2500 B.C. And Jesus claims that prior to Abraham existed that Jesus was, at that very moment he was speaking, was existing! Jesus’ choice of the words “I am” are very reminiscent of the words of the Father in Exodus 3 “I am that I am.” A subtle but powerful implication of deity! II. He had pre-existing ACTIVITIES: : Since He is pre-existent then he must have had pre-existent activities. Some of which are: [1] Eternal FELLOWSHIP with the Father John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. Notice the word “with” (pros pros) means with in the very presence of. He was, so to speak, “face to face” with the Father. [2] GLORY with the Father John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. It is clear that God is light and has an effulgent glory which no man can approach. Jesus shared in manifesting the glory of the living God before the incarnation. [3] CREATION of all things John 1:3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. Jesus is credited with being the actual agent of the creation. In his pre-existent glory he created the world. [4] PRESERVATION of all things
46
Hebrews 1:3 “upholding all things by the word of his power”
Jesus according to this text is the one who sustains and preserves the entire universe and takes it to its intended destiny. [5] Special APPEARANCES In the OT 1 Cor. 10:4 they drank from the spiritual rock … and that rock was Christ. These appearances are called “Christophanies.” Like a theophany (appearance of God) a Christophany is a special appearance of Jesus Christ prior to the incarnation. In 1 Cor 10:4 the “rock was Christ.” Similar to Ex 2 the “burning bush” was God. 2-- He is GOD … This is demonstrated by the fact that: [1] He is CALLED God John 1:1 “… and the Word was God.” logos = GOD John 20:28 “Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Hebrews 1:8 But about the Son He says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever …(God calls Him God!!!) Titus 2:13 “while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” Notice that when Christ comes it is said to be God coming! [2] He has God’s characteristics --eternality John 1:1; 8:58 --omniscience John 1:48 --omnipresence Matthew 28:20 --omnipotence Revelation 1:8 --Immutability Hebrews 13:8 --holiness, --goodness, --love etc
47
[3] He does the work of God
--creates John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17 --upholds creation Hebrews 1:3 --raises the dead John 11:25; (Only God can raise the dead!) --forgives sin Mark 2:5,6 (Only God can forgive our sins) 3. He is HUMAN Jesus is identified as perfect HUMANITY and is called the “last” ADAM (1 Cor. 15:45). All that can be said of true HUMANITY except sin (2 Cor. 5:21; 1 Peter 2:21; 1 John 3:5), can be said of Jesus. The expression, I’m only human” used with sinful short-comings is misleading. Jesus was “human” and did not sin! What we should be saying is “I’m only sinful!” Jesus was human in every point—He did not have a sinful nature or disposition. You see, sin is a human abnormality. God never created us such! [1] Therefore, He had a human: birth (Romans 1:3; Gal 4:4) body (Hebrews 2:14; 10:5; John 1:14) Maturity (Luke 2:52) soul (John 12:27) Spirit (Mark 2:8) [2] He had human limitations: He hungered (Matthew 4:2) He thirsted (John 4:7) He grew tired (John 4:6) He slept (Matthew 8:24) Notice: Human limitations are not “sinful.” Jesus voluntarily took on our weakness.
48
[3] He had human names: Son of MAN (Luke 19:10) Son of DAVID (Matthew 1:1) Son of ABRAHAM (Matthew 1:1) MAN (1 Timothy 2:5) JESUS (Matthew 1:21) 4. He is God-man In the incarnation of Jesus Christ there is one single INDIVISIBLE Person, Who is God, and there are two permanently united, but distinct NATURES: a divine nature and a human nature. Notice: In the circle illustration: One circle represents the “One person” = the Logos. Another circle represents the Divine Nature. Before the incarnation, the Divine person (logos) was God (Had God’s nature) and was yet distinct in person from the Father and Holy Spirit. All are the same divine nature—yet distinct persons. Notice: By means of the incarnation, the Second person (Logos), joined to His divine nature a human nature. The result was he became the God-man. The union exists in such a way that the PROPERTIES of the two natures are neither transferred nor changed in any way. Notice: The both 100% God and 100% man; and still 100% the God-man! He is in one person the GOD-man. Scripture says: “The Word (the logos =logos) The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 He did not take another PERSON to His nature, rather, in the incarnation, He took a NON-PERSONAL human nature (Luke 1:35). Notice: The KJV says ”that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God” the Greek uses the “neuter” to refer to the human properties.
49
Therefore the Divine Person (logos logos) is the single Person of the HUMAN nature as well as the Person of the DIVINE nature (Romans 1:3,4). 5. He is Virgin Born Within the virgin Mary’s womb, was CONCIEVED supernaturally, the sinless human nature and all that pertains to the humanity of Jesus Christ. Notice: It was the conception that was supernatural—the birth was a normal natural birth! Both Matthew and Luke affirm that the conception was through the agency of the HOLY SPIRIT: Matthew 1:20 Luke 1:31; 35 Not only did the Holy Spirit PRODUCE the conception, but He also protected the EMBRYO until birth (Luke 1:35). The virgin birth kept the Lord from the POLUTIONS of a sinful nature. Therefore, He is sinless he is a SUITABLE Savior! Conclusion: Assignments: Read in the New Christian’s Handbook chapter 5. Memorize: John 1:1, 14 Next Time: The Work of Christ
