5/22 Opener What are the forces acting upon the iceberg?
2
Forces What is weight? What is buoyancy?
The downward force of gravity acting on an object What is buoyancy? Buoyancy is the upward force that keeps objects afloat
3
What causes Buoyancy? Archimedes’ Principle:
An object is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. Buoyancy = Volumeobject x densityfluid B = (Vobject) x (Pfluid)
4
Types of Buoyancy Positive Buoyancy: The object has a lesser density than water and floats. Negative Buoyancy: The object has a greater density than water and sinks. Neutral Buoyancy: The object has the same density of water and neither sinks nor floats. This is ideal for our ROVs
