2 ARE HUMANS EQUAL? In pairs, write in your books one or two examples of inequality in the world...Are they examples of: PREJUDICE? DISCRIMINATION? OR STEREOTYPING?

3 FOR EXAMPLE... The following are all common stereotypes or prejudices that can cause discrimination.

7 Breaking Stereotypes Look at this image and the ones on the next slide. Why are they breaking with the norm? Write your thoughts into your work books.

DISCRIMINATION... STEREOTYPE...

11 STEREOTYPES fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance. PREJUDICE a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. b. A preconceived preference or idea. DISCRIMINATION unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice

12 Why can stereotypes lead on to worse things....?
BECAUSE THEY CAN BE... -The foundation for prejudice and discrimination. -Obstacles in getting to know others for whom they are, versus who we think they might be. -Stereotypes are unfortunately learned at a young age, and they remain, as most mental models do - untested, unchallenged, confused with reality. Common sources of steretoypes include parents, other family members, educators, peers, media, etc.

13 Write an example in your book of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination and answer these questions... Where do you think these prejudices come from in society? What results may occur from holding these attitudes? What do YOU think about these examples?

14 What other forms of inequality can you think of?
Discuss in pairs and see how many you can find...then tell me where this inequality stems from?

20 Reflection…. TODAY WE HAVE LOOKED AT EXAMPLES AND DEFINITIONS OF PREJUDICE, DISCRIMINATION AND STEREOTYPING. WE HAVE ALSO LOOKED AT WHERE THESE IDEAS MAY COME FROM IN SOCIETY AND AT WHAT THE RESULTS MIGHT BE OF HOLDING THEM. Write down your thoughts on what we have discussed today.

21 CHALLENGE Write down the names of people who have challenged a stereotype or prejudice and what effect it has had on their own or others’ lives. Why were they motivated to do this? You can discuss this with your partner.

22 Deeper Thinking In the final slide is an image which you are to read then write down your initial thoughts. Now turn to the person next to you and discuss your thoughts Now write down what you have discussed Prepare a question or a statement between the two of you to share with the class.
