10 Lesson 1 – General Introduction
Outline Introduction 1:1-17 Indictment of & remedy for sin 1:18 – 5:21 Anticipated questions re: salvation by grace through faith :1 – 11:36 4

11 Indictment #1 Ù Gentiles 1:18-32
Paul usually discusses God from a starting point of creation when addressing Gentiles In Athens Acts 17:24 Similarly, in this passage No mention of Jewish history or the Law Focus will shift starting in Rom 2

12 Indictment #1 Ù Gentiles 1:18-32
When we are “ungodly” or “unrighteous” in behavior, we must “…suppress the truth in unrighteousness” v. 18b To restrain or hinder the progress of something Lk 4: Thess 2:6-7 Pretending something doesn’t exist (out of sight…out of mind)

13 Indictment #1 Ù Gentiles 1:18-32
Truth is powerful v. 16 Suppressing truth opposes God’s desire for us v. 17 Suppressing truth doesn’t negate it…such behavior only invites God’s wrath v. 18a

14 Indictment #1 Ù Gentiles 1:18-32
Suppressing truth is foolish vv Evidence for God & truth is abundantly clear It is “…evident within us” v Eccl 3:11 To deny is to be “…without excuse” v. 20 To act contrary is to be “darkened with a foolish heart” v Psa 14:1

15 Indictment #1 Ù Gentiles 1:18-32
Seeing God’s invisible attributes vv How can one “see” the “invisible?” His eternal power & Divine nature are seen when we see what He has created Something created argues for a source (refutation of theory of evolution)
