Congratulations! You have been accepted for the role of Junior Developer in the design company although you are in a probation period. Before working with the actual clients, you have to show you can design, create and review multimedia products for a specific audience and their user requirements. Like nearly 40 others in the UK, the local council has declared a climate emergency and will soon be looking for ways to influence the city dwellers, so your manager wants to experiment in readiness.
5
Choose an Action to Show
Explain an action people can do to support the environment we depend on, by creating a linear multimedia product and an interactive product. Research each on and use the links below too. Choose from: avoiding single use plastics reducing home energy use sustainable travel not investing in fossil fuels (divesting) eating sustainably campaigning for the environment Choose the same action for both products
6
2 Products Your Manager would like you to design two products one linear and one interactive for potential use to demonstrate your skills. You should submit two separate full designs for approval. Your Manager has some expectation for the different products:
7
Linear Design an animated movie including video clips plus new text and graphics including original graphics. A voice over and other sounds would help. The purpose is to explain the action, how it helps and the benefits to the person doing it. Audience: employed adults It should be designed to be posted on YouTube and look good on a computer screen, tablet or smart phone. Alternatively, they can be submitted as files.
8
LINEAR The linear product should contain interlinked screens with:
● combinations of images with text ● suitable colour scheme and fonts ● screen transitions ● at least two video clips ● entry and exit effects applied to assets ● title screen(s).
9
Interactive Create a game such as a fact quiz or a challenge simulating the action. It must include at least two animated assets. The purpose is to keep people longer on the website, feel good about the action, increase their keenness and deepen their knowledge of the effects. The user requirements are high usability and accessibility. It should be easy for beginners to accomplish something but engaging for users to come back and be challenged to do better. The score should be shown throughout. Feedback should be clear as to how well the player is doing. Sound should be controllable in both volume and turning it off and on. To be embedded on the council’s website and used from a modern PC, Mac or tablet
10
Interactive The interactive product should contain:
● user interface for navigation and control ● suitable colour scheme and fonts ● at least two animated assets ● background sound track ● title screen(s).
11
Task Produce two complete design plans and storyboards for the two multimedia products for your client. One must be linear and the other must be interactive. Each set of designs should include the following: An introduction to the product which describes the purpose, target audience and user requirements of the multimedia product, explaining the type of customers the client wants to appeal to and how you will make your multimedia product appeal to this audience. Draft at least 3 prototypes of different ideas which include styles and formats. These can be written descriptions or annotated drawings. They should include records of stimulus materials and mind maps of first ideas. Identify which design you will be using and fully explain the reasons why the others were discarded.
12
Task Develop your design proposal to include:
styles and formats, e.g. mood boards for colours, fonts and images hierarchy chart of the content, to illustrate navigation, how screens are accessed asset list: graphics, audio and video with sources lists of hardware, software and other resources required to make it timeline to indicate how assets combine test plan to assess functionality. Complete your design with a written report which justifies your design including how it fulfils its stated purpose, original requirements and how it is suitable for the target audience. Justify the use of specific features which have been incorporated to enhance the user experience and why you have chosen to combine assets in this way to fulfil the brief.

What to Hand IN 1 x Written description of the purpose and audience for the linear design 1 x Written description of the purpose and user requirements for the interactive design 3 x prototype ideas for the linear design 3 x prototype ideas for the interactive design 2 x Plans and storyboard for chosen idea, using Storyboard Forms 2 x Timeline 2 x Asset List 2 x Test Plan 2 x Written word-processed justification and explanation [one for each product] See Moodle for examples of all of the above.
