The barometer We have already seen that there is a simple relation eq.1 between the height of a column of liquid and the pressure at its base. Indeed, if the pressure of a liquid is only slightly greater than that of the atmosphere a simple way of measuring it is to determine the height of the free surface in a piezometer tube as illustrated in Fig. 2 (The diameter of the tube must be large enough for the effect of surface tension to be negligible.)
