Core Competency 4 Engage diversity and difference in practice.

Practice Behavior 4.1 Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege or power. I attend awareness meetings when they are offered.

Practice Behavior 4.2 Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups. I continue to keep an open mind when meeting people that have different cultural backgrounds than me. I continually strive to learn about different cultures. I have taken an inventory of my own personal biases and have discussed them with my supervisor.

Practice Behavior 4.3 Recognize and communicate their understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. I take the time to learn about an individuals past experiences. By doing this I gain knowledge in their life experiences that have made them the person they are today.

Practice Behavior 4.4 View themselves as learners and engage those with whom they wok as informants. I always sit down with the individuals and discuss what they want/need out of further treatment. By these answers I do my best to link them to a facility that will work for them. Before anything is done I sit down with the individual and discuss the pros and cons of the facilities that have been picked for them.
