Born son of a Quaker blacksmith in a small village in 1874.

orphaned at age 7, he grew up in Oregon a lonely child.

As a youth, he showed great intelligence and a strong work ethic.
He won a scholarship to Stanford, where he graduated as an engineer. As an engineer he traveled the world and became very wealthy. (spoke Mandarin Chinese)

Out of college, he married his sweetheart Lou Henry

WWI, became world famous in heading the Commission of Relief and the Food Administration.

But the events at the end of his first year would lead to a national nightmare.
