Repetition and Ellipsis
Lesson 38 Repetition and Ellipsis
2
Repetition It includes the repetition of the same key words and grammatical structure, and it is an important means to emphasize the main idea and connect the context.
3
key words I could have shed tears with him– tears of pity and of rage at all this spectacle implied. Of the many gray, faceless bureaucracies in Wasington, the Veterans Administration is probably the grayest and most faceless of them all.
4
Grammatical structure
Cincinnati is a city blessed with less than its share of smut and more than its share of good restaurants. In America women still don’t get the recognition they deserve for their efforts, and rapitsts still don’t get the punishment they deserve for their crimes.
5
In text, it repetition is an important way to commit a text.
Actually, the period between election and inauguation is difficult for winners and losers alike. The winners have more official problems than they can handle, and the loser more regrets than they can bear.
6
Ellipsis It is a way to avoid repetition, and an important way to connect context. It seems that repetition is opposite to ellipsis, but in fact they are in union. we usually omit what is not important and repeat what is important.
7
Peter ate a cheese sandwich and (Peter) drank a glass of beer.
Mary has washed the dishes, (Mary) dried them, and (Mary) put them in the cupboard.
8
Exercise Rewrite the following sentences, omitting whatever can be omitted without change of meaning. 1 This is because the iron stays hard and firm both in hot weather and in cold weather.
9
For these reasons and other reasons it is worth considering how to make sentences shorter.
I do not write to a rpe-arranged plot, and have never written to a pre-arranged plot.
