Summary Steps for Getting Started on a Project Summary Steps for Getting Started on a Project Identify the desired outcome for each stakeholder on your project (What will make them a winner?)Identify the desired outcome for each stakeholder on your project (What will make them a winner?) Synthesize the project goal and get agreement from the stakeholdersSynthesize the project goal and get agreement from the stakeholders Define the project scope with the key stakeholdersDefine the project scope with the key stakeholders Develop the requirements of the system/software required to achieve the goalDevelop the requirements of the system/software required to achieve the goal Define all the deliverables to be provided to the stakeholders by the end of the projectDefine all the deliverables to be provided to the stakeholders by the end of the project Define milestones that can be used to demonstrate to the stakeholders progress towards the goalDefine milestones that can be used to demonstrate to the stakeholders progress towards the goal Define completion criteria for project (How we will know the project is complete?)Define completion criteria for project (How we will know the project is complete?)

On the Way to the Project Goal: Deliverables and Milestones Deliverable is a project result that is provided to the external project stakeholdersDeliverable is a project result that is provided to the external project stakeholders –Must have a well-defined completion criterion Milestone is an event occurring at a point in time that demonstrates progressMilestone is an event occurring at a point in time that demonstrates progress –Completion of a deliverable is a typical milestone –Focus on milestones demonstrating to the stakeholders measurable progress towards the project goal

Using Project Milestones Milestones are most useful when they clearly demonstrate incremental progress towards completion of the deliverables.Milestones are most useful when they clearly demonstrate incremental progress towards completion of the deliverables. Milestone definition should consist of:Milestone definition should consist of: –Milestone name –Date of projected completion (add later) –Completion criteria (how to tell if the milestone is achieved) Common tendency is to make the name imply the completion criteria (not always a good idea!)Common tendency is to make the name imply the completion criteria (not always a good idea!)

Completion Criteria for Milestones All milestones should have a 1-2 sentence completion criterionAll milestones should have a 1-2 sentence completion criterion –Completion defined by an event happening The XMLSpy tool will be installed and accessible from multiple workstationsThe XMLSpy tool will be installed and accessible from multiple workstations –Completion defined by testing All integration tests will be executed satisfactorily by the test groupAll integration tests will be executed satisfactorily by the test group

HW1: Example of a Location-Aware Service From the Inilex Sales Department to Inilex R&D: We have been contacted by Disney Theme Parks regarding the possible development of a product using our technology. Their goal is to provide, to families visiting one of their parks, a capability to track the location of children throughout the park. They call it Never Lost. Approximately 100 children are reported lost on a busy day, and frequently 5 or more employees have to deal with the lost children. Approximately 100 children are reported lost on a busy day, and frequently 5 or more employees have to deal with the lost children. They would like to be able to rent to a family the Never Lost capability. They envision a device used by the parents to determine the location of the children, and a small unit which the parents would attach to each child. Their estimate is that a family with multiple children would be willing to pay $25 to use Never Lost for a day. We believe there might be a wider market for this type of product. You have been appointed to lead a small team to explore this opportunity.

Communications is Key to Requirements Definition

Areas for Requirements and Design Decisions During the Product Exploration Phase Location TechnologiesLocation Technologies Communications TechnologyCommunications Technology –Area of coverage (at least 2x2 miles) –Cost (installation throughout the park, maintenance) Child unit characteristicsChild unit characteristics – –Small, low cost – –Non-breakable, shock resistant and water resistant Parent unit characteristicsParent unit characteristics – –Device cost and maintainability is a concern – –Easy to use – –Presents detailed maps of the park Software functionalitySoftware functionality

Homework Overview Disney will pay your company to explore alternative technical approaches and to create a prototype system for testing at a parkDisney will pay your company to explore alternative technical approaches and to create a prototype system for testing at a park Time and materials contract with your company for cooperative development through prototype testingTime and materials contract with your company for cooperative development through prototype testing Project starts February 15, and has two phases:Project starts February 15, and has two phases: –The Product Exploration Phase (about 10 months) –The Product Implementation Phase (schedule and cost set after Product Exploration Phase) Three decisions made already:Three decisions made already: –Provide a unique hardware identifier in each child unit –Test GPS and see if it is an effective technology within the park –Do prototype testing with alternative parent devices

Goal of HW1 The purpose of HW1 is to give you experience in defining the startup material for the Disney projectThe purpose of HW1 is to give you experience in defining the startup material for the Disney project Please fill in the following fields on the HW1 formPlease fill in the following fields on the HW1 form –Stakeholders (Both external to your company's development project and internal to the development project) –Goal statement –Completion criteria (The criteria to be proposed to Disney to determine the completion of your company's work in the Product Exploration phase) –Milestones (The events which can be used to demonstrate progress to Disney) –Deliverables (The items to be delivered to Disney at the end of the phase)
