10 Oil Supply and Demand The U.S. runs on energy, and oil provides about 1/3 of that energy. Petroleum is a nonrenewable resource, but no one knows how much petroleum might be left in reserves that lie deep beneath the earth’s surface. Experts try to predict when the U.S. will use up all of its own oil supply and there are different predictions. All agree that demand for oil is growing and that the oil supply is shrinking rapidly.
