A quick question for you…
Mastery Objective: You will be able to write a personal & literary response to your independent reading text. A quick question for you… Have you ever disliked a book that you thought was well-written? What was it? For me: Philip Roth, Jonathan Franzen, Annie Proulx… maybe more. These are authors whose books I have read, but whose writing I didn’t connect to. For example, I hated all of the characters in Philip Roth’s Sabbath’s Theater, but while I was reading I knew that it was a “good” book, in the sense that it was well-written and I kept turning the pages.

Select an essay to read next
Mastery Objective: You will be able to write a personal & literary response to your independent reading text. Select an essay to read next While you are reading, think about two things: Your personal response to the story. Moments when the author is using a strategy that makes the writing effective. Be prepared to share with a partner when you are done reading. Why are we doing this? You are going to develop a written response to one of these essays. You will be able to distinguish between your personal response, and a literary response.
