Source 1.3: Plan of the British Slave Ship “Brookes,” 1789
One of the most famous images of the transatlantic slave trade. The plan of the Brookes (also spelled Brooks) shows how 454 slaves were loaded in accordance with the ‘tight pack’ method following the Slave Regulation Act of 1788. However, before the Slave Regulation Act of 1788, the tight pack method would have meant the ship could carry up to 740 slaves. As such, conditions would have been much worse.
