Welcome to the Year 2 SATs Information Meeting 2019
This session will cover: - Why we have SATs - What they will look like this year - How we will help the children to prepare - How you can help your child - How results will be shared and who with - Key dates

Why do we have SATs? To check that children are reaching the expected National standard and that expected progress is being made between EYFS and KS1.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) This will be test assessed
SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) This will be test assessed. As it is a SPaG paper, all elements of SPaG are important in the test. For example, if the child has given a correct answer but the spelling or punctuation use is incorrect, they are likely to lose the mark. It will consist of a 20 minute punctuation and grammar paper with 20 questions followed by a 20 question spelling test (15 mins approx.) Adults will be allowed to read questions to children during this test.

Paper 1 In this test the children will be given a booklet with short extracts of text followed by questions based on the text. These include fiction, non-fiction and most likely poetry. They will have approximately 30 minutes and has 20 questions. Paper 2 In this test children will given a reading booklet containing 1 non-fiction and 1 fiction text and an answer booklet. These texts are more complex. They will have approximately 40 minutes and 18 questions (20 marks) Adults are not able to read anything to the children during this test.

First 5 questions are read by the teacher and children answer in their booklet. Teacher script Pupil booklet Children are then given time to work through the rest of the questions themselves. Take some time to look through the papers on your table to get an idea of the types of questions asked.

How we will help the children to prepare: - Informal practice of papers (peer work, sugar paper/ felt tip pens) -Guided Reading with SAT style questions Explicit reading skills taught as part of whole class teaching -Arithmetic practice in class -Grammar sessions -Opportunities to write for many different purposes and genres

How you can help your child:
Continue to read with your child at home and ask questions similar to those on the tests. Play games that help to develop mental arithmetic for example number bonds, times tables, addition and subtraction within 100. Take any opportunity you can to get your child writing, for example shopping lists, diary entries, cards, letters, invitations or short stories. Encourage your child to play games on educational websites such as; Bug Club

How will results will be shared
How will results will be shared? Teacher assessments will be given using the language mentioned previously. SATs results will be given as a ‘scaled score’. The ‘expected standard’ will be a score of Children who score higher than 100 will be above the expected standard and children who score below 100 will be below the expected standard.
