If the bacteria are in a petri dish with only a certain amount of available space and a one-time supply of food (agar) – what will eventually have to happen to their population?
24
They will run out of space to spread out and then use up all their one-time food supply and ALL starve to death.
25
NOW COMPLETE THE HUMAN POPULATION GRAPH ON THE BACK OF THE PAPER
* again, be very careful of the axis labels!!
26
NOTICE ANYTHING SIMILAR TO THE BACTERIA GRAPH?
27
Let’s take a look at the current world population!
28
WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THIS GRAPH THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE BACTERIA ?
We didn’t make these numbers up – here’s the real graph from the United Nations Population Division, 1993. WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH THIS GRAPH THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE BACTERIA ?
29
AFTER THE “BOOM” THERE WILL ONLY BE A TEMPORARY “BUST” AND THE POPULATION WILL FIND EQUILIBRIUM AGAIN AT A LOWER “CARRYING CAPACITY” BECAUSE FOOD IS BEING PRODUCED CONTINUALLY – BUT NOT ENOUGH TO SUPPORT TOO MANY PEOPLE..
30
WHEN THERE’S LIMITED RESOURCES
(space, water, food, energy, minerals, etc. are “Limiting Factors”) ONLY A CERTAIN SIZE POPULATION CAN BE SUPPORTED. IF THE POPULATION OUTGROWS THE AMOUNT OF AVAILABLE RESOURCES, THEN THE POPULATION WILL BE FORCED TO ADJUST. HUMANS ARE ALREADY (and have been at times) FIGHTING LIFE AND DEATH BATTLES OVER WATER RIGHTS, ENERGY, FOOD, SPACE. EARTH IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A PETRI DISH IN SPACE, RIGHT ??! end show
