How did cities change? The Growth of Cities 1800 - 1850
European cities grow dramatically… especially in Britain Cities become the home of industry.

People doing whatever they can to make money
What happened economically? Rise of Capitalism People doing whatever they can to make money How? building factories building machines buying raw materials producing goods finding markets No matter what – it’s the people controlling production, not the government

How did business change? New Business Organizations PARTNERSHIPS Two or more people put their money together in hopes of making a profit CORPORATIONS Create an organization of investors and all share the wealth

How did the workers feel?
Rise of the Working Class More factories = more workers needed Problems: Poor wages Long work weeks (16 hours a day, 6 days a week) Dangerous, unsafe conditions But… workers made more money in the factory than they would have on the farm! No laws against child labor

What did workers do? Unhappy workers couldn’t fight the factory on their own… Rise of Trade Unions So, they formed TRADE UNIONS. An association of workers who unite to improve wages, benefits, working conditions, rights, etc…

What was socialism? Workers rarely shared in the wealth of capitalism
Development of Socialism A new idea emerged during this time called SOCIALISM Government should own all the MEANS OF PRODUCTION (factories, land, money, resources) This way, no one is rich…. and no one is poor – everyone shares in the wealth of the society!!!
