II. Need for Salvation The need for salvation stems from the consequences of sin. Sin has several consequences: Alienation from God (so we) need RECONCILIATION Lost full image of God (so we) need RESTORATION Cursed—including death (in three ways): Physical death (so we) need RESURRECTION Second death (so we) need SATISFACATION Spiritual death (so we) need REGENERATION We are helpless to initiate salvation. We need a Savior to come rescue us from our sin and its consequences! So God sent us a Savior (1 Tim 1:15) … III. Basis of Salvation The Triune God’s choice to save us: Father chose us in Christ before time: ELECTION (Eph 1:4) Christ chose to die for us in time: REDEMPTION (Eph 1:7) Spirit chose to regenerate us at His time: REGENERATION (John 3:8) IV. Mercy = “compassionate withholding what is deserved” Titus 3:5 He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, Both are related to “Wrath” = justice meted out on condemned people Wrath Giving us what we deserve Withholding from us what we deserve Giving us what we do not deserve Mercy Grace
