2 What was or is its purpose
ASEAN accelerates the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian nations. Asian also promotes regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Malaysia Myanmar Philippines Singapore Thailand Vietnam ASEAN REGIONAL FORUM MEMBERS: These countries fosters constructive dialogue and consultation on political and security issues of common interest and concerns; and they make significant contributions towards confidence-building and preventive diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region.

4 History Founded in 8 August 1967 by the five original member countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The countries form an alliance motivated under the fear of communism. Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, Bangkok, 15 December 1997 Declaration on Joint Action to Counter Terrorism, 5 November 2001 On 23 October 2008 establishing the ASEAN Integrated Food Security (AIFS) Framework and Strategic Plan of Action on ASEAN Food Security (SPA-FS) with the main goal of ensuring long-term food security and to improve the livelihoods of farmers in the ASEAN region. 18 November, ASEAN Foreign Ministers signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management. On December, the inaugural China-ASEAN Beijing Economic Forum (CABEF) took place. The forum reaffirmed the importance of bilateral dynamics between China and ASEAN and identified economic opportunities for the two sides.

6 Current Events- U.S.-China Trade War Boosts Fast-Growing Southeast Asia
Foreign primary production are moving out to ASEAN countries, because of U.S.- China trade war Last fall the Chinese acoustics manufacturer Goertek announced that its production of Apple’s Airpods wireless headphones will move to Vietnam, because of the trade war. A survey of U.S. firms manufacturing in China found that 18.5% had either moved production to Southeast Asia or were considering it. Another reason to move to south-east asia is because the Labour cost is can run as low as one-third to one-half those in China. New factories, new technological application inside the factor (Automation), more efficient. ASEAN countries will be working with and learning about advanced technology, and more prosperous societies creating in-country consumer demand.

7 Advantages/Disadvantages
Elimination of Tariffs between members More access to goods Easier travel between regions More job opportunity Greater political independence in the region Disadvantages Reduced tariffs have negatively impacted poorer ASEAN countries such as Thailand's agricultural sector due to a greater number of imported agricultural goods. Faced criticism for not protecting small and medium enterprises and for being reluctant to promote human rights and democracy
