1 Cell Surface/Intercell Communications Division
Mike, Rachel, Tanner, Kim, and Sam

2 Cellular Mobility Task Foce
3 Different Processes: Flagella Cilia Cell Crawling

3 Cellular Mobility Taskforce
Flagella: Whip-like tail that rotates to drive cell forward Can also act as a sensory organelle Similar to a boat motor in function

4 Cellular Mobility Taskforce
Cilia: Tiny hairs that cover cell and beat in coordinated waves that allow movement Internal structure similar to flagella, but differs in function

5 Cellular Mobility Taskforce
Cell “Crawling”: Internal cytoskeleton expands and contracts to allow motion 3 Steps: Protrusion Adhesion Deadhesion and contraction

6 Plant Cell Walls Primary: Made up of cellulose Protects cell
complex carbohydrate made up of glucose molecules Very rigid Box shaped Provides for circulation & distribution of water, minerals, and nutrients Houses molecules that regulate growth Protects cell

7 Plant Cell Walls Secondary:
Composition almost identical to primary cell wall Contains more lignin than primary makes wall harder/sturdier Separated by pectin layer

8 Extracellular Matrix Diplomats
Is a complex meshwork of tissue that connects the cell to the ‘outside world’ It guides the cell to growth, development, and communication, while also providing structural support. Made up of: proteoglycans (protein core) Water Minerals

9 Without Extracellular Matrix?
Cell would not be able to interact and connect to other cells, which would prevent growth of organisms. This company could not branch out and do business with others.

10 Plasmodesmata What is it? Why is it important
It is a hole in the cell wall to enable transport of proteins such as RNA between neighboring plant cells It does not open the cell wall for any outside intruders. Why is it important without it, the cells would not be able to reproduce correctly or all cells would be a little different Plasmodesmata also enables transport of materials required for the plant cell to do photosynthesis
