The Indwelling Holy Spirit
Romans 8:1-17 The Indwelling Holy Spirit It is a surprise to many to know that very few bibles use the word “indwelling” – only the NASB pre 1995 contains it of common translations. Yet if you ask many religious people about the indwelling of the Spirit, they have a number of ideas. Romans 8 seeks to place the idea of the Law of Christ and the Holy Spirit as the same – alive inside us
4
Continuity of Thought 1. Sin leads to spiritual death (1-2) 2. Law reveals sin (3) 3. Justification is apart from Law (4) 4. Christ brings justification by propitiation (5) 5. We access this freedom by baptism (6) 6. Sin holds us captive through the flesh (7) 7. Being free requires being Spiritual (8)
5
Difficulty in Understanding
Confusion over terminology - What does “indwelling” mean? Confession on application - What does this accomplish - How can I know this occurs?
6
Difficulty in Understanding
Two ideas: 1. The Holy Spirit dwells in us 2. He works between us and the Father Romans 8 is difficult because there are two ideas about the Spirit: The means and effort and purpose of His dwelling in us What He is doing for us before God (in a sense, outside us)
7
Romans 8 and the Spirit Four Simple Points on His abiding in us:
1. Here, Holy Spirit is the Law of Christ 2. He is present by Faith 3. He is NOT manifested apart from Faith 4. He has NOT taken control away from us Four ideas in chapter 8:1-17
8
Contrasting Two Points
The Flesh: The world Emotions Deceivable The Spirit: The mind of God Alive in Scriptures Truth Four ideas in chapter 8:1-17
9
Romans 8 – Law and Spirit the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death – vs 2 if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness – vs 10
10
Romans 8 – Law and Spirit Here, the Law of Christ is the Holy Spirit Baptized into Christ = Put on Christ Galatians 3:27 Put on the New Man Colossians 3:10-14 Col 3:10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him-- 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. 12 ¶ So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.
11
Romans 8 Holy Spirit dwells in us BY FAITH So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
12
Romans 8 Holy Spirit dwells in us BY FAITH He does not dwell in us apart from faith - By sight (by our senses) - By signs and wonders - By human revelation
13
Romans 8 - Control Sin dwelled in me previously – 7: I acted on sin and did what it desired - I am a slave to sin Now the Spirit of Christ dwells in me - I act on Christ and what He desires - I am a slave to Christ
14
Romans 8 The Mind of God is Spiritually revealed - Concept of inspiration – 2 Peter 1: Therefore, living by it = Spiritually living
15
Romans 8 John 15:4 "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me” When the Spirit dwells in me: - I am living by the Word of Truth When I live by the Word of Truth - The Spirit dwells in me
16
Conclusions The Spirit is manifested in us by Faith - The revealed Word Spiritual living solves fleshly desires - Living by the Word of Truth - Abiding in Christ and He in us
