1 Prepare for laboratory activity
Chemistry– 5/30/2019 Objectives (I can…) 5.1 Classify solids as ionic, molecular, metallic, or network Bell Ringer Prepare for laboratory activity Homework: Play with your silly Putty

2 Silly Putty Lab Introduction: "How many of you have ever wanted to make one of your favorite things to play with right at your house?" Well, I have finally discovered how to make one of my favorite things right here at home. All of these ingredients are found at your local grocery store. Look I made silly putty!!! Materials: 2 Tablespoons of Elmer's glue 2 Tablespoons of water 1/2 Tablespoon of solid Sodium Borate (20 Mule Team detergent) stirring rod (wooden stick) 2 plastic cups

3 Silly Putty Lab Procedure:
Mix 2 Tablespoons of Elmer's glue and 1 Tablespoons of water together in the plastic cup using the stirring rod. In separate cup, mix 1/2 Tablespoon of sodium borate to 1 Tablespoon of water. Add borate solution to the glue solution. Stir the solution until it forms a solid Knead the putty in your hand until it gets hard

4 Silly Putty Lab Explanation: Silly putty is a polymer. Polymers are all around us. You probably know them best as plastics. Single molecules are called monomers, while a lot of single monomers linked together form long chains of polymers (have children link arms to show that they are forming a monomer). The ingredient in Elmer's glue is called polyvinyl acetate. The monomer molecule is vinyl acetate. The glue has already been formed into a polymer containing very long chains of polyvinyl acetate. When I added the sodium borate, the chains linked together in a cross-link to make bigger polymers (have our group go between rows of children and cross-link with them). This reaction changes the ingredients to putty. If vinyl acetate = A, then the polymer = A - A - A - A - A - A -A etc. The borate links two or more of the AAAA chains together. Borate = B(OH)41- Acetate = C2H3O21− .
