Organic Chemistry Lesson4 (Day 2)

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
A saturated hydrocarbon is one in which the maximum number of hydrogen atoms per carbon atom. An unsaturated compound is one in which contains a double or triple carbon-carbon bond. The ratio of carbon to hydrogen atoms is lower than that of a saturated hydrocarbon

2. Alkenes: An alkene is a hydrocarbon that contains one or more carbon-carbon double bonds. An alkene can have only one carbon-carbon double bond. It is still considered an alkene.

Naming Alkenes: Ex. Name the following alkenes:

Naming Alkenes: Identify the longest carbon chain containing the double bond. This is the parent chain and will be named with the suffix “ene”.

Naming Alkenes: Number the carbons so that the carbons containing the double bond has the lowest possible number.

Naming Alkenes: Substituents of the chain are named and numbered.

Naming Alkenes: Put it all together with proper punctuation.

3. Alkynes: An alkyne is a hydrocarbon that contains one or more carbon-carbon triple bond. An alkyne can have only one carbon-carbon triple bond. It is still considered an alkyne.

Naming Alkynes: Ex. Name the following alkynes:

Naming Alkynes: Identify the longest carbon chain containing the triple bond. This is the parent chain and will be named with the suffix “ene”.

Naming Alkynes: Number the carbons so that the carbons containing the triple bond et the lowest possible number.

Naming Alkynes: Substituents of the chain are named and numbered.

Naming Alkynes: Put it all together with proper punctuation.

Alkenes & Alkynes Assignment
For #9 give proper name on any that are incorrectly names Change 9h to 1-ethyl-3,4-dimethyl-5- hexyne
