2 Fig. 1 Genotypes of hepatitis B virus in 100 asymptomatic HBsAg-positive carriers stratified by age. The prevalence of genotype C (▨) tended to decrease in older patients (41% in carriers ≤35 years vs. 13% in those >65 years; p = 0.03). The prevalence of genotype B (2) remained unchanged in different age groups (56% in carriers ≤35 years vs. 42% in those >65 years; P = 0.4). ■, Other genotypes. The positive rates of HBeAg in the 4 different age groups were 59%, 16%, 4%, and 0%, respectively. 3 Fig. 2 Genotypes of hepatitis B virus in 80 patients with HCC stratified by age. The prevalence of genotype B (2) in HCC patients younger than 35 years was even greater than that in asymptomatic carriers (90% vs. 52%, P < 0.05), and showed a gradual decrease to 40% in those older than 66 years (P = 0.06). Genotype C (▨) was not found in HCC patients younger than 35 years, and its prevalence gradually increased from 21% in HCC patients aged between 36 and 50 years to 50% in those older than 66 years. ■, Other genotypes.
