Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity of Platinum/Ruthenium Heterometallic Complexes
Nancy Carter Dopke, Department of Chemistry, Alma College, Alma, Michigan An understanding of how the structure of complexes containing two different types of metal atoms influences their ability to oxidize an alcohol can allow for better tuning of catalysts. Platinum and ruthenium complexes are of particular interest due to the success of alloys and nanoparticles as electrodes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) where the alcohol methanol is oxidized with oxygen. An important starting material for the synthesis of PtRu complexes is the monomeric species dppePtCl2. We have developed synthetic procedures for this complex that decrease the reaction time from 8 hours to 1 hour by the use of a microwave reactor. The reaction of dppePtCl2 with a ruthenium dimer (see below) results in a heterometallic ruthenium-rich complex whose reactivity is being studied.
