2 Prior to the 1800’s Europeans controlled little land in Africa
Traders and explorers visited and traded but did not stay Slavers either captured Africans or bought them from locals in West Africa In the 1800’s, Europeans conquered large parts of Africa and established colonies Between 1884 and 1885, the major European powers met at the Berlin Conference to make rules for dividing Africa Wanted to prevent a European war Africans were not invited
