Memorial Day
2
Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It originated in the years following the Civil War
3
On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month.
4
“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed.
5
On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.
6
Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.
7
Veterans Day/Memorial Day Difference?
Memorial Day is dedicated to remember those who fell in battle or passed as a result of battle injury. Veterans day is a day of thanksgiving to all who have served in our military
8
Unity and Memorial Day The National Moment of Remembrance Act signed in 2000, declares 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day a time of symbolic unity, a moment of silence in honor of the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.
9
Unity Every nation past and present seeks, even demands unity.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said during a news conference at the meeting in Atlanta that teams whose players and personnel do not stand and show respect for the flag and the anthem will be fined by the league.
10
What is it’s purpose, why is it needed?
Unity What is it’s purpose, why is it needed?

Remember the tower of Babel?
9 That is why it was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth. [Genesis 11:9 NIV]
12
Why did God do this? [Genesis 11:1-3 NIV] 1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
13
Shinar Folk saw the power of Unity
[Genesis 11:4 NIV] 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
14
God agreed as to the power of unity
[Gen 11:5-6 NIV] 5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
15
[Genesis 11:7-8 NIV] 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other." 8 So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
16
[Gen 11:9 NIV] 9 That is why it was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
17
For unity to exist… People must move from individual positions/platforms to agreed positions/platforms What happened at Babel? People of differing language had come together
18
Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
God says through Amos Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?
19
Two ways we come to conclusions about life, it’s origin and development
We look at things as they are and ask – How did what we see come about? We accept the Bible as a revelation of God informing us how what we see came about
20
The anthropologist asks, which came first language or culture?
Considering the present this question cannot be answered with certainty and is still debated. If the Bible is considered the word of God, the question is answered

[John 5:46 NIV] 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. [2Timothy 3:16-17 NIV]
