1 What is a false teacher?

2 2 Peter 2:1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.

3 “But” is like “However” and connects to a previous thought
Peter has been taken prisoner He is facing the promise of Jesus – John 21:18,19

4 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!“ [John 21:18-19 NIV]

5 How do we know Peter is facing death?
Because he says so!

6 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. [2Peter 1:13-14 NIV]

7 In light of the fact that He is facing death…
Peter is reminding the church of central facts…. And making that what he is saying has the authority of God.

8 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. [2Pe 1:15-16 NIV]

9 Remember, we saw… 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. [2Pe 1:17-18 NIV]

10 WE ALSO… 19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. [2Peter 1:19 NIV]

11 What is a false teacher? A false teacher is one who teaches anything other that what the “we” taught. Why is this???

12 Peter says two things about the writings of the apostles and prophets
“We were eyewitnesses”… 1:16 “We also have the prophetic message”… 1:19

13 Above all 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation of things. [2Peter 1:20 NIV]

14 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. [2Peter 1:21 NIV]

15 Peter is saying What is written in this letter, and the other writings of the eyewitnesses is controlled by God’s spirit One who teaches something other than what has been revealed to the prophets is a false teacher

16 How important is teaching what the Bible says?
We have come back to the connection of “but” of chapter two verse one

17 1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. [2Peter 2:1 NIV]

18 “They will secretly introduce destructive heresies”
Here is what people do by teaching things “other” or contrary to the Bible “They will secretly introduce destructive heresies” Heresies – a body of teaching, a philosophy of approach, e.g. Sadducees, Pharisees, Christians

19 They will even “…even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.”

20 Peter’s intent is clear
The body of teaching recorded by God’s chosen Apostles and Prophets is only teaching God want us to teach The teaching of “other” philosophies that have not been “revealed” by God are not “of God”

21 This is the consistent teaching of the New Testament
3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's holy people. [Jude 1:3 NIV]

22 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. [Galatians 1:6-7 NIV]

23 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God's curse! [Galatians 1:8-9 NIV]

24 To which Philosophy do you present yourself?
All churches in a community teach about the same Therefore just choose the one that serves your needs best Personal needs and Community needs come first

25 OR Do you still think what the Bible says comes first?
Are you trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or are you trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.

26 If you are trying to please people, you are not a servant of Christ.
19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for "people are slaves to whatever has mastered them."[2Peter 2:19 NIV]
