1 GROUP INVESTIGATION HYPOTHESIS CHOICE
STAGE 2 PSYCHOLOGY

2 HYPOTHESIS You need to choose at least one IV and one DV as part of your group investigation. The hypothesis you choose will impact what research design and method you will be examining. This will also impact how you complete your results section.

3 INDEPENDENT VARIABLES
Group Investigation

4 EXPERIMENTAL Comparisons between white noise and non-white noise group. Must do a bar graph in results.

5 QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATIONAL
Comparisons between pre-existing groups i.e. 8 or more hours sleep vs. less than 8 hours sleep. Must do a scatterplot in results.

6 QUALITATIVE Analysis of one focus group question.
Must do content analysis presented in a table in results.

7 DEPENDENT VARIABLES Group Investigation

8 OBJECTIVE QUANTITATIVE DATA
Snowflakes and/or mazes scores.

9 SUBJECTIVE QUANTITATIVE DATA
Epworth sleepiness scores Hours of sleep obtained per night or per week

10 QUALITATIVE Content analysis of focus group responses.

11 Quantitative Observational
Research Method Research Design Experimental Quantitative Observational Qualitative Objective Quantitative (snowflakes and mazes) White noise vs no white noise Comparisons between pre-existing groups (hours of sleep) n/a Subjective Quantitative (Epworth sleepiness score; sleep log) Comparisons between pre-existing groups (hours of sleep) (focus group) Content analysis of focus group question

12 GROUP INVESTIGATION WORK LOG
You must provide evidence of collaborating with other students on your proposal and hypothesis choice. The easiest way to do this is to write at least two detailed journal entries summarising the collaboration you did with your fellow group members, the progress you made on your own proposal/hypothesis and any suggestions made between the groups. These journal entries need to have dates as headings and be on a separate page. Your proposal isn't marked for the group investigation, but the evidence of collaboration with other group members is.

13 PROPOSAL Group Investigation

14 PROPOSAL Stick to the word limit (250 words)
Put your research question/hypothesis as a header of your proposal

15 PROPOSAL WHAT TO WRITE IN YOUR PROPOSAL Outline of issue
What is the research topic about? Why are you interested in researching this topic? What is your research question? Formulate as a hypothesis or question (makes sure you have included the IV and DV)

16 PROPOSAL Explanation of Research design to be used and why it is so e.g. Experimental because participants are randomly assigned to two groups – control and experimental Quantitative Observational, because participants characteristics of...were pre-existing and required no manipulation Qualitative, because rich verbal data will be collected about participants opinions

17 PROPOSAL Explanation of Assessment method to be used e.g.
Objective Quantitative (behavioural counts, physiological responses, standardised test scores) Subjective Quantitative (subjective questionnaires, rating scales, self report inventory) Qualitative (content analysis of qualitative verbal responses)

18 PROPOSAL Explain how you intend to use the data to address the question (i.e. how will it be analysed?) Explain the steps you will take to convert the raw data into a meaningful form. Comparing mean/median/standard deviation scores...statistical analysis of data should be restricted to these types of comparisons Summarised data will be converted into a .....graph Identifying themes using content analysis Concluding sentence
