Objective: Describe examples of how the United States has dealt with international conflicts.

2 World war i Impact of US involvement US trade grew
Allies were able to defeat the Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary How/Why US became involved? Germans attacked the British cruise ship, Lusitania. 1,198 passengers were killed, including 128 Americans. President Woodrow Wilson campaigned to support the Allies. The U.S. in WW1 (3:33) World war i

3 World War ii Impact How/Why? Ended the Great Depression in the US.
Divided Europe into Communist and Democratic nations. How/Why? December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the U.S. military base at Pearl Harbor. America joined the war. 4 Korean War Impact U.S. would stop the spread of Communism.
Thousands of men lost their lives with nothing changing in Korea. How/Why? Korea was broken into 2 parts. The northern half was communist. The southern half had a democratic government. North Korea invaded S. Korea. President Truman decided not only to defend S. Korea, but also try and rid N. Korea of communism. Korean War

5 Bay of pigs invasion How/Why?
Fidel Castro overthrew the government in Cuba. He was supported by the Soviet Union as a strong communist. President Kennedy sent troops to try and overthrow Castro on April 17,1961. The invasion did not go well. Cuba’s military defeated the American forces. Impact: US seen as weak and ineffective. Castro’s strength grew. Bay of pigs invasion

6 Cuban missile crisis Impact: Why?
Khrushchev withdrew missiles from Cuba. Kennedy promised not to invade Cuba, and also withdrew missiles pointed at Soviet Union from Turkey. Why? After the Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuba strengthened ties with Soviet Union. Began building bases for nuclear weapons. U.S. created a naval blockade of Cuba. 7 Vietnam War Impact: America was unable to win the war.
War grew increasingly unpopular in the US Congress passed the War Powers Act limiting President’s ability to send troops. Why? Vietnam was divided into 2. North Vietnam was under the control of communist Ho Chi Minh President Johnson announced that N. Vietnam had attacked American ships in neutral waters. Congress authorized the President to send troops to Vietnam. Vietnam War

8 Why? Reagan began build up military resources against Communism. Soviet Union began facing economic difficulties. Soviet Union began to crumble. Cold War in 9 Minutes (9:42) Impact: Berlin Wall came down. Independent states began to form from the dissolved Soviet Union. Cold war ended. End of the Cold WAr

9 First Gulf War (1990) Why? Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait.
George HW Bush along with a coalition of forces sent troops to Saudi Arabia to protect the kingdom. Then, U.S. forces advanced on Kuwait. 1st Gulf War (4:13) Impact: Iraqi forces were quickly defeated. President Bush decided not to invade Iraq First Gulf War (1990)

10 Why? George W. Bush believed that Saddam Hussein had “Weapons of mass destruction”. Invaded Iraq in March 2003 Iraqi army was quickly defeated. The Events That Led To Iraq (3:31) Impact: Rebellions led by Hussein’s former supporters & Fundamentalist Muslims continued to break out. U.S. troops stayed to ensure new democratic government continued. Second Gulf war
