The Living Earth– NGSS/CCSS
In accordance with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Framework and the State of California’s Three-Course Model, biology (also known as The Living Earth) will examine the broad subject of life science on our planet. This model combines all high school performance expectations (PEs) into the three courses. To highlight the nature of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) as an interdisciplinary pursuit with crucial importance in California, The Living Earth is the first course in the sequence. NGSS is broken down into Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI), Science and Engineering Practices (SEP), and Cross-Cutting Curriculum (CCC). Mastery of these standards will be broken down into eight Instructional Segments (IS):

Biology: Scientific Practices
In each one of the units we will be discussing this year, you will be asked to use CER to guide your learning and understand how scientists figured out what’s in your textbook.

Classroom Rules PROMPT PREPARED PRODUCTIVE POLITE ELECTRONICS
You will be in your assigned seat when the bell rings You will turn in assignments on or before the due date PREPARED You will bring all necessary materials and supplies to class PRODUCTIVE You will pay attention in class, follow the directions the first time they are given, and stay on task at all times POLITE You will treat everyone and everything with respect at all times You will raise your hand for permission to speak You will observe all the rules in the student handbook as outlined by Cleveland High School, LAUSD, and federal, state, and local laws. ELECTRONICS You will put away your cell phone in the parking garage as soon as the bell rings You may be asked to put your phone in the cell phone parking lot
