1 Data and Assessment Session 2 13/12/11

2 Think about a recent or current assessment task with a particular class.
What are the assessment focuses? How many are there? Are they equally important? Do you expect the same from all your students?

3 In the words of OFSTED ... A recent focus on sharing assessment criteria with students was evident during the inspection. This process was, however, not always built into the lesson activity and students are often not helped to understand how they can improve their work.

4 Success Circles Save My Dog AF1 imaginative AF7 Vocabulary AF8
Spelling

5 Save My Dog Speeches Why would it be a good idea to choose your own assessment focuses based on a mark scheme?

6 To choose own assessment criteria based on a mark scheme
1)Write your name and fairytale level in the top right hand corner of the success circle sheet 2) Write “Save my Dog” in the circle in the middle 3) In one circle, write “AF1 – imaginative” 4) Choose 2 other AFs that you can do well at in your speech (Choose carefully- you will be assessed on these!) 5) Write these 2 AFs in a circle – with a key word to remind you. E.g. AF5 - sentences

7 AF1 - imaginative AF2 - appropriate AF3 - organisation AF4 - paragraphs AF5 - sentences AF6 - punctuation AF7 - vocabulary AF8 - spelling

8 Self- assess in your success circles – write the level within the circle What could you do to improve your level?

9 In pairs, read a speech and peer assess it using the success circles
In pairs, read a speech and peer assess it using the success circles. You will assess it 3 times! When you have agreed the 3 levels, write them outside the circle. One person must be ready to explain why you have given it that level! The other person must explain what the writer needs to do to reach the next level!

10 How could you use success circles?
Write the topic in the central circle. Pick one AF for everyone (optional). How many AFs do you want to cover?
