Receive Jesus said … “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was going to another place for a visit. Before he left, he called for his servants and told them to take care of his things while he was gone. He gave one servant five bags of gold, another servant two bags of gold, and a third servant one bag of gold, to each one as much as he could handle. Then he left … [For the rest of the story see the suggested video] From the Gospel according to Matthew, Chapter 25, verse 14 and 15

Receive Jesus often used stories to describe something about the nature of the Kingdom of God. In this story a ‘Talent’ was a measurement of money. Each Talent was worth a vast amount (in Rome it was about 32kg of gold). So even one Talent was a generous amount. Now we use the word ‘talent’ to mean natural or learnt skills.

Engage Video suggestion … The parable of the three servants
Some discussion ideas … What are the sorts of skills that people may have? Think of one skill – how may it be used unwisely? How do we develop skills? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … Write down your own list of the skills and talents that you have, think about how you can use them wisely.

Respond Amen God, may use our gifts and skills wisely,
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] God, may use our gifts and skills wisely, ready to serve each other for the good of the world. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …
