Knots and Ropes will be presented and practiced…..
1. Tonight – overall introduction and homework assignment. 2. Next class Lecture #3 April 4th – instruction and small group practice. 3. Rock Field Trip April 13th – Knots and Rope station; your skills will be evaluated.

Tonight – overall introduction
What’s being provided in your equipment packet 1 – locking carabiner 1 – 5 foot length, 5mm nylon rope 1 – 12 foot length, 1” nylon webbing

With the 5mm nylon rope, learn and practice these knots:
Figure 8 knot Rewoven Figure 8 knot (also called Figure 8 Follow Through Bowline knot (single) Double Fisherman’s Bend knot Klemheist Hitch knot

With the 1” nylon webbing, learn and practice these knots:
Overhand knot Water knot Try making a Hasty Harness (more on this below)

Use the rope and webbing to learn and practice:
With the 5mm nylon rope: With the 1”nylon webbing: Figure 8 knot Rewoven Figure 8 knot (also called Figure 8 Follow Through Bowline knot (single) Double Fisherman’s Bend knot Klemheist Hitch knot Overhand knot Water knot Try making a Hasty Harness (more on this below)

A few words about the Hasty Harness
There are instructions for how to construct this on the “Knots & Rope Assignment” sheet. Information is also in Freedom of the Hills, page 165 Diaper Sling. Just work on the basic construction for this; don’t need to have all sized yet, we can complete this at next class. This is a simply constructed harness to be used with an assisted descent; this is where the carabiner will come in. We will learn and practice this descent technique at the next class.
