Estimating Crowds The normal method used by most agencies and news organizations for estimating crowd size if by examining a series of sample squares and estimating the total population. Most of the time the samples are the same size. But sometimes, the individual making the estimates vary the size of the sample squares. In either case, they rely on the sample mean to calculate the total estimated population.
