1 The Resurrection

2 God’s call of Moses God’s concern for His people God’s eternal nature There is another lesson revealed, referenced in Matthew, Mark and Luke

3 Resurrection - [Psalm 16:8-11 NIV] 8 I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. 11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

4 Some, namely the sad ones--- very Sad –u-See – did not accept that there was a resurrection
This constituted a stumbling block to them. One that not only would rob each one of personal peace with God, but ultimately cause them to reject God’s Messiah.

5 Let’s start back at the bush
[Exodus 3:1 NIV] 1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

6 2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.

7 3 So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight--why the bush does not burn up." 4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am."

8 5 "Do not come any closer," God said
5 "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground."

9 [Exodus 3:6 NIV] 6 Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

10 Let’s forward to Sadducees
[Matthew 22:23-24 NIV] 23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.

11 25 Now there were seven brothers among us
25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died.

12 Here’s the question! 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?"

13 We probably should ask, why this question?
[Matthew 22:29-30 NIV] 29 Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

14 31 But about the resurrection of the dead--have you not read what God said to you, 32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living."

15 How did they miss it? “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” Two factors involved in their missing it… Knowledge and experiential, first hand faith

16 Most of us in this room have knowledge and believe that God has the power for “resurrection”
The word has many uses, now and in the first century. ἀνάστασις – anastasis. It is to get going again. Translated according to context, it can mean getting up from the sitting position Lk 2:34, or rising form the dead. Acts 1:22 In the context of Matthew it is called “The Resurrection”

17 Resurrection Jesus indicates that that God, being the God of the living and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, means that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are alive, as we speak. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.

18 [Matthew 17:1-2 NIV] 1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

19 [Matthew 17:3-4 NIV] 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."

20 [Mat 17:5-7 NIV] 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."

21 [Matthew 17:8 NIV] 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
Transfigured - μεταμορφόω – Transliteration – (meaning to change the Greek letters to English characters, transliteration being a translation of the Greek) A transliteration is metamorphoō

22 What have learned about the Resurrection?
God’s people who have passed, have really not passed. They are alive. God is not the God of the dead but of the living. In the Resurrection we change

26 [Luk 20:36 NIV] 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God's children, since they are children of the resurrection.

27 [Jhn 5:20-21 NIV] 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

28 [Jhn 5:22-23 NIV] 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

29 [Jhn 5:24-25 NIV] 24 "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

30 [Jhn 5:24-25 NIV] 24 "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

31 [Jhn 5:29 NIV] 29 and come out--those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

32 [Jhn 11:24-25 NIV] 24 Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;

33 [Jhn 11:40-41 NIV] 40 Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

34 [Jhn 11:40-41 NIV] 40 Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

35 [Jhn 11:42-43 NIV] 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

36 [Jhn 11:43-44 NIV] 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

37 [Act 24:15 NIV] 15 and I have the same hope in God as these men themselves have, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.

38 [Rom 6:5 NIV] 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

39 [1Co 15:35-37 NIV] 35 But someone will ask, "How are the dead raised
[1Co 15:35-37 NIV] 35 But someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?" 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else.

40 [1Co 15:38-39 NIV] 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another.

41 [1Co 15:40-41 NIV] 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.

42 [1Co 15:42-44 NIV] 42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead
[1Co 15:42-44 NIV] 42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

43 [1Co 15:45-47 NIV] 45 So it is written: "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.

44 [1Co 15:48-49 NIV] 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

45 [1Co 15:48-49 NIV] 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.

46 [1Co 15:50-51 NIV] 50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed--

47 [1Co 15:52-53 NIV] 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

48 [1Co 15:56-57 NIV] 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

49 [1Co 15:54-55 NIV] 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

50 [1Co 15:58 NIV] 58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm
[1Co 15:58 NIV] 58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
