In a civil case, the one being sued.
What is the goal of a defendant in a court trial?

The person/party who brings legal action against another in a civil case.
What person represents the plaintiff in a criminal case? A civil case?

10. Verdict
A decision on a disputed issue in a civil or criminal case, the final outcome.
What does the verdict signal? Who is responsible for this?

Apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court
