Lesson Objective Solve one step equations involving addition and subtraction
12
One Step Equations An equation is a mathematical statement that two expressions are equal A solution of the equation is a value of the variable that makes the equation true. A one step equation is an equation in which you will only need to perform one step in order to solve the equation
13
One Step Equations We solve one step equations by using the inverse operation Inverse operations are operations that “undo” each other For example, addition “undoes” subtraction and subtraction “undoes” addition. Multiplication is the inverse of division
14
Solving One Step Equations using addition and subtraction
If a number has been added to the variable, subtract that number from both sides of the equation. If a number has been subtracted from the variable, add that number to both sides of the equation.
15
Replace the variable with your answer.
Example 1: Solve m + 7 = 11 m + 7 = 11 To undo the addition of 7, subtract 7 from both sides of the equal sign. m = 4 Check the solution. m + 7 = 11 Replace the variable with your answer. (4) + 7 = 11 11 = 11
16
+4 +4 10 = m 6 = m - 4 6 = 10 - 4 6 = 6 Example 2: Solve 6 = m - 4
To undo the subtraction of 4, add 4 to both sides of the equal sign. 10 = m Check the solution. 6 = m - 4 Replace the variable with your answer. 6 = 6 = 6

Practice 86 + y = 99 x – 11 = 9 q + 10 = 22 n + 3.5 = 6.7
18
Practice 86 + y = 99 y = 13 x – 11 = 9 q + 10 = 22 n + 3.5 = 6.7
19
Practice 86 + y = 99 y = 13 x – 11 = 9 x = 20 q + 10 = 22
n = 6.7 a – 1.5 = 4.2
20
Practice 86 + y = 99 y = 13 x – 11 = 9 x = 20 q + 10 = 22 q = 12
n = 6.7 a – 1.5 = 4.2
21
Practice 86 + y = 99 y = 13 x – 11 = 9 x = 20 q + 10 = 22 q = 12
n = 6.7 n = 3.2 a – 1.5 = 4.2
22
Practice 86 + y = 99 y = 13 x – 11 = 9 x = 20 q + 10 = 22 q = 12
n = 6.7 n = 3.2 a – 1.5 = 4.2 a = 5.7
