1 Volunteer Training Literacy Strategies

2 Supporting Readers: Before, during and after reading
Before Reading: Discuss the cover of the book. Make predictions about the story.

3 Ideas for Motivation: Read a sample of the text for the student so that the child can hear an example of good reading. Take turns reading the text if a child struggles. Read together Use voices in reading to make it more exciting. Be specific in your encouragement to the child. (I like the way that you used your voice to make the character sound excited about her birthday present.)

4 During Reading: Discuss illustrations, make predictions, ask questions and check for meaning before reading the text on the page. Refer to the document, “What to do when a child gets stuck on a word.”

5 WHAT TO DO WHEN A CHILD GETS STUCK ON A WORD
1. Have the student look at the word instead of looking at the adult for support.

6 2. Look at initial, middle, and ending sounds and then move through the word following the sounds.
Example- dog or puppy

7 3. Chunking Break the word apart and focus on the known parts
Little= lit tle Going= go ing Wheat= wh eat Pressure= pres sure

8 4. Remove the suffix or prefix and find the roots.
Example: Word Prefix Root Word Suffix rewashed re wash ed preheating pre heat ing repainted paint

9 5. Reread the sentence. Find what make sense, looks right and sounds right for the unknown word.
6. Look at the pictures to support the word.

10 6. Skip Then go back and reread.

11 8. Get your mouth ready to make the sound.
9. Think about the meaning of the story

12 After Reading: Have the child summarize the book Ask questions
-What was the main idea of the story? -Describe where the story takes place? -Describe the main characters. -What was the problem in the story and how was it solved? -What was the author’s message?
