1 History & Resistance India

2 Warm Up: What differences & similarities existed with Buddhism & Hinduism? Why do you think people still follow Hinduism if the caste system discriminates against so many?

3 Early On... Indus River Valley (2300-1750 BCE)
-Two main cities (Harappa and Mohenjo-daro) -Advanced urban planning (city grids & sewers) -Europe developed sewers so much later! -The language has never been translated. Rise of Hinduism (about 1500 BCE) -Some practices date back to the Indus River Civilization -Sometimes referred to as “the oldest living religion in the world” ** As seen in crash course Indus Valley, Aryan is a sanskrit word for ‘noble one’

4 Internal Empires Mauryan Empire (324-200 BCE)
-Hinduism and Sanskrit spread across South Asia -Sanskrit is the classical language of Hinduism & Buddhism -Both Sanskrit & English are part of the same language family! Gupta Empire ( CE): Golden Age of India -Rise of chess (caturanga) -First time that scholars had the idea that the Earth revolves around the sun -Advances in algebra, science, architecture, & sculpture.

-Language & Religion

6 External Empires… On Empires…
Muslim Empires (900’s-1600’s CE) -Tolerant of existing religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism) -Sikhism began in 1600’s- youngest major world religion Trading Empires ( CE) -Portuguese arrived first, followed by Dutch, English and French. Yay! -Rise of British East Trading India Company: controlled all trade by 1769. -Gained control by alliances & favors to local princes.

7 The British Raj -Mutiny occurred in 1858 against the East Trading Company! -The company is kicked out (India had been ruled by a corporation basically… like, picture Wal Mart). -’The British Raj’ (Raj means Rule) -The British took full control of India --—Based on your previous knowledge about colonialism in Africa, brainstorm with a partner a list of possible positive and negative effects of British rule in India

8 Pros & Cons of the British Raj
-Built infrastructure -Raised a military -Governance by local princes -Established a formal administration —Cons -Indians treated poorly -Exploited the land for resources -Majority of Indians had little -political power -Solidified the caste system So… What happens now…?
