a) Central sleep apnoea.
a) Central sleep apnoea. A stopped-breathing episode (zero airflow) is associated with a cessation in respiratory effort. Respiratory activity is absent in the thoracic and abdominal movement sensors and in the oesophageal pressure lead. Breathing resumes after an electroencephalogram (EEG) arousal. b) Obstructive sleep apnoea. Cessation of breathing (zero airflow) is evident despite ongoing respiratory effort. Respiratory activity continues in the thoracic and abdominal movement sensors. The oesophageal pressure lead shows increasing inspiratory effort. Breathing resumes only after an EEG arousal. 1 cmH2O = 0.1 kPa. D. Pevernagie et al. Eur Respir Rev 2007;16: ©2007 by European Respiratory Society
