9 FACTS ABOUT DIGESTION Most people think the process begins in the stomach. It begins in your mouth! Not only does mechanical digestion begin in the mouth, but so does chemical digestion.  Mechanical digestion is chewing food into smaller pieces. Chemical digestion is breaking down food into small chemical components so your body can use it. Amylase in your saliva starts to break down the starches in sugars.

10 Did you know? Sugar/carbohydrates will dissolve partly in your mouth from your saliva, but protein has to be chewed to digest it.

11 Each Organ Helps with Digestion
First, the mouth has teeth to break food into pieces, and saliva to start to break down food chemicals. Then, the esophagus is a muscular tube that pushes food down to the stomach. The stomach has acid and movements that help to break down food. Then food goes to the small intestine, where chemicals break down food into nutrients and sugar for energy. The small intestine has special cells that absorb what is needed. The large intestine is larger and stores leftover materials until they leave the body.

12 The Digestive System Review
• The function of the digestive system is to break down food for energy and nutrients. • The major parts of the digestive system are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. • Saliva and chewing begin the process of digestion. • The esophagus muscles move food and liquid into the stomach. • Acids and action in the stomach continue the process of digestion. • The small intestine continues digestion and absorbs food nutrients.

13 Digestive System The digestive system is one of the systems of the body. Each part of the digestive system has an important job to do so the body can get nutrients from food. Classwork: Make a drawing of the digestive system. Be sure to show the five major organs and label them. In your own words, explain how each organ’s structure helps with digestion. (use captions)
