Writers think about the people in their lives who have left a special imprint on their thoughts and memories and who have helped create memorable moments. YOUR JOB TODAY: You will think about the people in your lives you have grown to appreciate to help generate ideas for your memoirs. Inform, Present, Engage, Reiterate

Inform: When memoir writers start to think about possible ideas for their memoirs, they often reflect on the important people in their lives who left an imprint. These special people left memories and emotions that are etched in the hearts and minds of these authors. Which mentor text authors wrote about special people or relationships?

Present: In Bad Boy, Walter Dean Myers talks about a teacher Mr. Irwin Lasker. A sixth grade teacher who tried to get him to realize his potential. While you listen try to make a list of the important things Mr. Lasker did for Walter – -

Remember with The Bat Boy & His Violin by Gavin Curtis. What were his special connections? How did the visuals and the words both demonstrate this connection?

Engage: Both authors wrote about special people who left lasting impressions and reflected unique and admirable qualities. Turn & Talk to a neighbor and think about a special person in your life. This person could possess unique qualities. Have provided encouragement or inspiration. Taught you an important lesson. Or are just fun to be around.

Reiterate: Memoirs often include & focus on special relationships and people in the writer’s life. TODAY During Writing Time you will use the handout Special Relationships to start generating ideas about who in your life you could write about. Choose a couple to elaborate on by describing what makes them special, include details that help paint a picture for your readers. Reflect on the importance of this person in your life. Write down any fond memories and celebrate their significance in your life by writing about them.
