2 Objective You will be able recognize elements of keyboarding technique in order to begin practicing them.

3 Keyboarding The manipulation of the keyboard by touch, not sight. Positioning the hands on home row and using each finger to key a specific key.

4 Benefits of Keyboarding
Improvement in: Language arts – reading, spelling, and writing ability Efficiency in using the computer as a writing, editing, and computing tool, thereby maximizing work time Attitude toward writing – less frustration than when looking for keys Mr. Mckluster’s quote to me.

5 Benefits of Keyboarding
Improvement in: Motivation towards doing schoolwork and taking pride in it Creative thought Integrating keyboarding with all subject areas Preparation for a technological society

6 Technique Technique refers to: Posture while sitting Wrist, hand, finger motion Correct key stroking Students who demonstrate proper keying techniques should achieve success. 1.) …at the keyboard

7 The Importance of Good Technique
Forms the foundation for successful touch keyboarding Extremely important to develop good keyboarding habits right from the start 1.) Proper technique forms… 2.) I cannot encourage enough to develop

8 Correct Body Posture Spine straight, lower back against back of chair, leaning slightly forward from the waist. Centered in front of keyboard; body directly in front of “H” key Sitting a comfortable distance from the keyboard (a hand span is suggested) Feet on the floor (if possible), slightly apart for body balance

9 Correct Arm and Hand Position
Wrists low, but NOT resting on desk/table while keying Arms relaxed, elbows naturally close to the body Fingers curved (like holding a tennis ball) Hands close enough together to “touch” thumbs; fingers upright, not leaning toward little fingers Hands and wrists “quiet,” almost motionless Forearms nearly parallel w/ slope of keyboard

10 Correct Key Stroking Home row is the anchor for all keystrokes
Key each key with the correct finger Key the space bar with the right thumb Shift w/ the appropriate “little” finger Use the “little” finger of the right hand for the enter/return key Keep eyes on copy (text, screen, board, etc.) rather than keyboard, once a key has been learned and practiced
