Biology Do Now KEY Explain how your digestive system can be called a “system” based on yesterday’s lesson. Our digestive system can be called a system because it is made of several organs (esophagus, stomach, sm/lg intestines, liver, gall bladder) that work together to help us break down foods so that we can absorb the nutrients and eliminate the solid waste.

Homework - Copy Students will research to define and describe an example for each term: atom, molecule, covalent bond, ionic bond, polar molecule, nonpolar molecule, electronegativity, and hydrogen bond.

Students will read the article and answer the guide questions. 1) What fraction of the elements found in stars do humans share? 2) What elements are living things made of? 3) What does CHNOPS stand for? 4) What does APOGEE stand for? 5) Why do we have to study chemistry in biology?

Element Name Atomic Number: The number of protons in its atom. Atomic Number Element’s Chemical Symbol Atomic Mass Atomic Mass: The mass of one atom of the element

The Periodic Table can also be divided into three main types of Elements: Metals, Metalloids, and Nonmetals

Metals Metals are shiny Metals are solid at room temperature
Metals have high conductivity Metals can be flattened and not shatter (malleable)

Nonmetals Nonmetals are not shiny
Nonmetals are mostly gaseous at room temperature Nonmetals are poor conductors Nonmetals are brittle and will shatter easily (not malleable or ductile)

Metalloids Metalloids have characteristics between metals and nonmetals Metalloids are solid at room temperature Metals are semi-conductors
