2
Introduction What causes MTSS?
Repetitive micro trauma to the anterior muscles of the low leg causing irritation and inflammation
3
Objectives By the end of the lesson…
You will indentify the reasons why we tape for MTSS You will select necessary supplies for taping for MTSS You will demonstrate the taping technique for MTSS
4
MTSS – Taping for Shin Splints
By taping the anterior low leg we can help compress muscles that are irritated by micro-trauma Supplies: Tuff Skin 1.5” athletic tape Pre-wrap (for unshaven skin)
5
MTSS -- Procedure Start distal and work proximal
With the athlete standing, have them shift weight to unaffected leg, placing the opposite in a relaxed position Use adhesive spray or wrap with Pre-Wrap Place anchor strips at the ankle just superior to the malleloli and below the patella Run a single piece of tape down the medial and lateral low leg between two anchors Start distal and work proximal Apply tape obliquely (on a slant) pulling lateral to medial first Use the side anchors as your start and stopping point
6
MTSS -- Procedure Overlap the next piece of tape creating an “X” by pulling medial to lateral Continue proximally to the superior anchor strip Complete the procedure by re-applying medial and lateral anchors Finish by wrapping with elastic wrap Check for comfort and function
7
Practice! With a partner gather supplies and practice the taping procedure for MTSS
